Aveda Mane Street Hair Salon Starts off Round Robin against Hobarts

The Aveda Mane Street team will try to get back on track and keep their playoff hopes alive when they take the ice against Hobarts at the Bayshore tonight.
Aveda went winless (0-3-1) on a recent four-game homestand and will now play two straight on the road.

Aveda played last Wednesday evening against Northpoint and were dealt a 5-3 loss by the blue team, who scored just 13 seconds into the game and led the rest of the way.

Aveda ceded control to Northpoint before the ice had frozen. Defenceman Len Neal lost control of a pass on a play developing from the opening faceoff, leaving the puck open for Northpoint ,  to give a 1-0 lead 13 seconds into the game.

It was three seconds shy of Puffer record for fastest goal to start a game, but that did not slow Northpoint.

"There is no excuse," Aveda defenseman Len Neal told his team's official website. "We need results and we need results now and our season is on the line here. We've shown at times here that we are a playoff-capable team. We're still in it despite the last couple of weeks, so we've just got to get the job done."

Happy birthday to Les Shapansky

Happy birthday to Les Shapansky the Owen Sound hero of the 1972 Summit Series against Pest Control, who turned 69 (?)  recently.

Shapansky  scored the winning goal in three of Sun Life’s four victories during the Summit Series, including the series clincher in Game 8.

I still find it hard to believe that Shapansky is not in the Owen Sound Hockey Hall of Fame, but here’s what he had to say about it when I spoke with him a couple of years ago.

"So many Puffers get upset that I’m not in the Hall of Fame, and I tell them all the time if I was on the committee, I wouldn’t vote for me,  Shapnsky said. Quite frankly, I didn’t have a Hall of Fame career."

"I keep telling them the worst thing that could happen to me is they put me in there because then everybody would forget about me,he added with a laugh. I’m a lot better on the outside and then nobody forgets about it."

"There’s a lot of guys who had a lot better careers than I did and they’re not in the Hall of Fame. So if they ever put me in, there would be somebody else who wouldn’t get in, and I would feel bad about that."

Somehow, I don’t think too many people would feel bad if Shapansky became a Hall of Famer.

Stobbe Homelife posts 6-1 Win over Northpoint

Jan. 4, 2011 Owen Sound— On a team that features the last two Art Ross winners, the reigning Selke winner, a three-time Vezina finalist and, arguably, a Real Estate Agent in the Puffer League, it's hard to single out one HomeLife player as the proverbial straw who stirs the drink.

You can, in fact, make the case that any one of the Homelife stars sets the agenda for the team and, in Wednesday night's win 6-1 over Northpoint, all played a lead role.

But let's challenge the accepted orthodoxy about the team and offer up another name; a player who lacks both the notoriety and the hardware of his more celebrated colleagues but who, in fact, represents the most accurate barometer of the Homelife's game.

Are you ready? OK, here it is. As Bill Stobbe goes, so goes HomeLife.

Stobbe as has become his custom, wasn't terribly visible in HomeLife's workmanlike win over Northpoint but that's the player the coaches have come to rely on.

The bad news? Stobbe's stirring DiMaggio-esque seven-game scoring streak came to an end on this night. The good news? He was plus-1 and helped keep things neat and tidy around the goaler, particularly in the third period when Homelife took back-to-back penalties for having a two-goal lead.

Wed. night collection in memory of Dave "Grizz" Manners

Good afternoon Puffers;
As you were told last week, the executive of the Owen Sound Puffer Hockey League is asking for your help in remembering the spirit that Dave Manners brought to puffer hockey each week.
We would like to take up a collection and present it to the Rec Centre Committee in memory of Grizz. These monies collected will be combined with monies collected by other groups that Dave played hockey with in the hopes that they will total at least $5000.00 at which point a plaque will be placed on the donors wall in memory of Dave "Grizz" Manners.
We all have fond memories of Grizz and it would only be fitting to see his name on the wall of the place he spent so much time.
This Wed. night, Nov. 16/11 will be collection night. Let's all do what we can to get Grizz's name on that wall.
Thank-you from the executive.

Hobart's Team Arm Bands

In Honour of  Dave "Griz" Manners, the Hobarts Team are wearing arm bands for the rest of the season. Since black arm bands wouldn't work well with the black jersey's... the arm bands are in memory of Griz's multi-colour suspenders.

Dave Manners Puffer Profile circa 2005

Nicknamed "Griz" or "Mr. Marg Manners"...The looks of a matinee idol mean Dave is forever being pursued by young female admirerers; sorry ladies, but he is already spoken for...His mother's maiden name was Kringle...Increasingly plays the game with a style he describes as "aggressively sedentary"...A decorated veteran of the Boer War...One of the best friends a beverage fund could ever have...Has worn the same hockey pants since the late sixties...Often seen zipping about the local waterways on his SeaDoo.

Morris Named First Star

If Frank Morris keeps this up, he won’t be able to stay out of the spotlight.

The Thoms Construction winger was named the first star for the opening month of the Puffer season after scoring five goals and eight points in two games. Notoriously shy, he answered only a handful of questions after receiving the honour Monday morning and largely deflected the praise to his teammates.
Morris would much rather let his play do the talking.

“I’m just going out there and playing the game and doing whatever it takes to get wins,” he said.
He had a natural hat trick and 3 assists during a 6-3 loss against Hobarts on Oct. 12 and added two more goals in a 3-2 loss against Northpoint the previous week.

“Statistically it’s pretty clear the way he’s played,” said acting coach and league president Rob Lourie “There were some great performances obviously throughout the league, but Frank's done it in every game so I think it’s deserved.”
